Bunbury is Happy!

All of us here at GMi would like to congratulate everyone involved in the making of the Drug Aware  Happy Bunbury film project. Set to Pharrell Williams hit song ‘Happy’ the project showcases a variety of places and faces around Bunbury that celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of the local community.

After attending workshops run by the City of Bunbury and GMi the project was filmed by a number of Bunbury youths and their carers on small handycams. The footage was then given to GMi for editing. The resulting video came together brilliantly and was a fantastic way to celebrate International Day of People with Disability 2014.

It was a great project and the kids did amazing work. We are very proud to of been able to be part of this project and so should everyone involved.

A Game of Drones – GMi’s new aerial filming platform!

Exciting times at GMi as we commence building our 4K RC drone.

Custom made – by us – it will support new 4K cameras. Why custom make it?  Well it comes down to flexibility of use – we want a drone that has added safety features, can carry a variety of payloads and can support new improvements in batteries, motors and cameras as they are released.

So having scoped the requirements and components needed it was off to the workshop to commence building, testing and configuring.  Bring together the lifelong hobby of RC building and flying and skills in electronic implementation, our tech nerds (read Carl and Peter!) spent a week building.

We are now into the configuration and test flying phase whilst developing operating procedures and safety guidelines.  The aim of the project is to prepare the way for the next drone – capable of lifting much heavier camera rigs.  It will be coming soon too!

Would you like some toast?…

Acquisition is important and at GMi we have seen some fantastic new toys in our camera department over the last 4 years. However, shots are only half the picture, editing is the rest of the story – your story. And if you ask our Post team – it is the most important part of the story!

To enable us to keep bringing you the best in Post means we are constantly evaluating when to upgrade and 2014 is it for Post, with the building and commissioning of our new Avid workstation.

By combining workstation grade components, the new Thunderbolt 2 RAID interface, dedicated on-board RAID and the latest from nVidia Quadro video cards we are able to install the latest editor from Avid – Media Composer 8.1, cutting edge compositing with Boris RED 5.5 as well as the more well known Adobe tool box of post applications.

With data access speeds capable of multiple tracks of simultaneous 4K playback and blistering render times, we see this platform as the basis of Post at GMi for the next 3 years.

We are excited – come in and see us for a coffee and chat about your next production using one of the few Avid Edit Stations outside the metro area, and find out why 99% of all motion picture production is done on an Avid!

Moore fun with Macro!

Jumping Spider Mark M has been running around testing out some of the new GMi Macro equipment, and has come back with some stills and vision of some of the tiny inhabitants of his garden.

What he is really looking forward to is getting out into the scrub and better yet underwater to find some really interesting specimens! Especially the great Nudi’s and Blennies that reside in the southwest! In the meantime expect to see some great macro shots in some of our upcoming productions.

9 Years today, Mark M celebrates another year with GMi!

Mark M LG9 years ago today GMi’s Mark Moore joined GMi’s ranks as our camera man in a day full of memories, shenanigans, and ultimately hypnosis.  It was a day fondly remembered by all the staff here past and present. In that 9 years Mark has shown no desire to leave the good ship GMi (the hypnosis must of worked then… or possibly it has failed horribly) and has grown (quite literally!) with the business and helped it become one of WA’s best small production houses.

Originally Mark thought he would only be with us for a couple of years before moving back to Perth but when he discovered just how good the Southern Lifestyle is, there was no turning back. So instead we now find him not in some cramped newsroom in a city rushing for a deadline, but instead swanning around our great state filming all sorts of interesting things for us, and spending time with his wife and new son in a place he now certainly calls home.

Congratulations Mark, we’ll try and get rid of you next year, surely we will have found a way by then!

Wardandi Memorial Park

502 ParkGMi is working on a documentary about the creation of  the Wardandi Memorial Park. The documentary will cover the construction of the park by the work teams, the preparation and burial of Noongar remains returned to the South West from a number of museums across Australia, interviews showing the cultural significance and steps taken over 25 years to make the park a reality.

Bugging DEC’s science team!

Clare Bug hunt Department of Environment and Conservation GMi

The crew at GMi have stayed in touch with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) scientists working on the Fire Mosaic research project near Walpole in the South West of WA.  Our youngest team member, Carl‘s daughter Clare, was invited to take part in the catching and classification of the bugs and became DEC’s youngest volunteer entomologist.

After spending a few days with the crew of science division Clare can boast finding 6, so far, unclassified species of moth, 1 new beetle and an all new wasp!

GMi’s favourite new word… Bokehlicious

canon, 7d, GMi's, new, DSLRGMi have joined the legions of Bokeh fans with their purchase of a new canon 7D. When coupled with GMi’s ever increasing collection of fast glass the images we have been getting are impressive to say the least. Whilst some of us are sad to see ‘old faithful’ (40D) put out to pasture we are more excited about the 7d’s capability to capture Full HD video.

This allows us to have our lightest and most compact HD camera setup yet,  which is great for getting to those shoots where the gear allotment is severely restricted. Shoots such as trips to remote mine sites where access is light plane FIFO, or for wildlife shoots where long treks on foot and fast setup are essential.GMi Dragonfly
