The End (2016) is Nigh!

As 2016 winds to a close 2017 will see something else spin up. Something with props perhaps?

The boys here at GMi are itching to get the hotly anticipated new DJI drone in there hands. With stunning images, a smaller footprint for easier travel and considerably longer flight times Carl and the Marks are trying to be patient while we await our delivery. In the meantime they have been watching some of the stunning footage some of the lucky people around the world (who have already received their drones) have been capturing. Check out this great one by Philip Bloom.

2016 saw the boys on filming all over our great state be it in the Kimberley Region, to Broome and the famous Cable Beach, to Dirk Hartog Island during the 400th Anniversary of landing there, back out to the desert to see a land reclaimed, to our states foodbowl heartlands or to our lush southern forests and stunning coastlines, 2016 has been a truly amazing year!

So as 2017 rolls in with a new drone a new AVID editing suite, and another new camera on the horizon GMi has never been better suited to tell your story. So please enjoy the end of year festivities, travel safe and drop us a line in the new year we would love to hear from you!

Gorgeous Gorges! GMi takes another trip into the Kimberleys

Mark has continued GMi’s love of filming in the wonderful parks of the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. A recent trip saw Mark from GEO Media interactive (GMi) and a photographer from the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) take a trip out along the Gibb River Road to film the parks of Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek, and Geikie Gorge.

Some of Marks highlights from the trip were getting up close to film crocodiles, the guided walking tour through Tunnel Creek, the amazing boat tour along the Geikie Gorge, and the drive itself allowing to see the many different sights and landscapes along the way. He has never seen so many Boab trees and Termite mounds before! The shoot also allowed us to give our new 4k camera a real test as the shooting conditions were quite varied.

It was a great trip and Mark is incredibly keen to get back up there to continue exploring the amazing parks of our great state with camera in hand! Before that though there is another trip to Dirk Hartog to complete, so keep your eyes peeled for a story on that soon!

4k Kimberly Adventure with GMi

Mark and Carl have just returned from filming in Broome in WA’s pituresque Kimberley region with GMi’s new Panasonic 4k camera. They spent just under a week in filming in a variety of conditions and locations (most of which were hot!) and the new Panasonic DVX200 camera performed beautifully in all of them.

It was GMi’s first working trip into our states top end, but 2016 will see us spend quite a bit more time up in the tropics. More info about those trips later in the year.

The filming was part of a production for the new Kimberley Ports Authority and the Port of Broome. We have now produced videos for the Albany, Broome, Bunbury, and Dampier Port Authorities. E-Learning with GMi and Water Corporation

Recently the Water Corporation launched a series of online training packages for businesses to become Waterwise users. Fully produced in-house here at GEO Media Interactive (GMi) the training packages included video components, animations, interactive media and programming, as well as SCORM and LMS authoring and implementation.

The Water Corporation entered these packages into a statewide training award and we here at GMi are very pleased that they were selected as finalists. IBC, Easy as 1, 2, 3…!

Carl fresh from IBC, gives us his thoughts on the future.

2015’s International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) was the chance for many manufacturers to release new 4K products for the Indie and small post house market. And we are shopping for exactly this sort of camera so exploring the stands and trying the products was one of my main tasks! Cameras on our shopping list include Sony’s FS7 and new compact FS5, Canon’s new C300mk2, Panasonic’s DVX200 and Blackmagic’s new Ursa Mini 4.6 and 4K. Of course I approach cameras as an editor, Mark feeling left out had to make do with constant texts and phone calls from the stands.

Pairing any of these cameras with a Shogun external recorder will give us quick turnaround in the edit with native DNxHR recording of 4K so that ticks my primary concern in the work flow! So it is on to ergonomics. Display conditions don’t really give me a feel for image quality so I’m mainly looking at ease of use and layout. Straight away the Canon falls off the list in my eyes in this regard! The Sony FS5 is impressive but the clear winners are the Panasonic and Australia’s home grown Ursa Mini. Two very different cameras, the Panasonic’s fixed lens gives us a run and gun production camera with fast setup. The Ursa gives us sexy bokeh shots and specialist shots using our canon lenses – but slower to set up and requiring a lot of accessories. Ergonomically I like them both, with clear, crisp, large LCD viewfinders and well laid out controls. So let’s have both!!!

Well not quite – we’ll probably start with the DVX200 to replace our current production camera for 4K work and run and gun productions, following this up with purchase of the Ursa for those sexy shots, macro and long lens nature work. The sweetener with the Blackmagic gear is DaVinci Resolve, full version with every purchase. This is the industry standard in colour grading software and is rapidly gaining a reputation in the editing area too.

GMi gets wise with the Water Corporation

The Water Corporation of Western Australia is about to launch a series online training packages based around businesses and households becoming Waterwise users. These packages were fully produced in-house here at GEO Media interactive (GMi) and contained video components, animations, interactive media and programming, as well as SCORM and LMS authoring and implementation.

Whats more the work we have been done has been submitted as an entry into a statewide award. More details on the award entry and packages will be made available in early 2016 when the training goes live! In the meantime check out the Water Corporation website and learn what it means to be Waterwise!
